Eva Greiner Szabo was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary. Her parents,Antal and Ilona, were influential professionals in the Hungarian Film Institute where Eva began her career in acting, starring with Oscar winning film Directors Szabo, Istvan (no relation) and Madaras, Josef. The All Star cast in the movie Eltusszentett Birodalom included her co-star Gyorgy Szakaly, who presently is the Director of the Hungarian Dance Academy.
Although her passion was dancing and so she was accepted into the Hungarian National Balett Institute in 1970. She completed Ballet school with Honors in 1979. This graduating class was the Genesis of what became the “Gyori Ballet”.
Eva appeared in all of the International Tours and all of the performances from the beginning of the Gyori Ballet in 1979 until 1987. During her time with the Gyori Ballet Eva met and married Magyar, Zoltan, the Olympic Champion Gymnast. She went back to school and earned her Diploma to teach Dance. This four year Degree was the First ever awarded by the Hungarian National Ballet Institute and Eva received hers with Honors. She taught Ballet in the “Gyori Balett Specialized Secondary School” for two years. During the Gyori Balett tour in Baltimore, Maryland, USA in 1986 Eva met her second husband, Zoltan Szabo. That changed her life and she retired from the Gyori Balett in 1988, knowing that “I never wanted to dance for another company”! I just wanted to teach and raise a family.
In the U.S. she lives near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has a son and a daughter. Her husband’s family are originally from Gyor. They left Hungary during the Revolution in 1956. Shortly after arriving in the U.S. she was a major organizer of the very first American group of dancers and teachers to not just visit but also study Ballet in Hungary under the name “International Ballet Society”. Eva has since been teaching continuously in numerous Dance studios in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Nebraska. She is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She began teaching there in 1999. She started teaching at the Pennsylvania Ballet School in 1995. The school separated from the company and became the “Rock School”. It participates in the “Youth American Grand Prix”, which is the largest ballet competition for students in the world.
Eva attended the Gyori Balett 20th Anniversary performance. For the 25th Anniversary she was awarded with an “EMLEKLAP” (memorial leaf) and the “EMLEKEREM” (medallion) from Gyor-Moson-Sopron Megye.
She is trained and teaches ; Classical Ballet, Pointe, Historical Dance, Ballroom Dance, Folklore Dance, Pas-De-Deux Technique and Variations.
